Lipstick under my Burkha story is settled in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh. It is the story of 4 women on their own journey towards liberation.

Usha (Ratna Pathak) is a 55 years old widow who one day starts reading an erotic book that lights up her senses. She consequently signs up for swimming lessons and starts engaging in love phone calls with her young swimming teacher, without revealing her identity. As she secretly goes to the swimming pool, reads and talks over the phone, she faces the suspicions of her family members and neighbours.

Leela (Aahana Kumra) is a beautician, daughter of a single mom who struggles financially. She is in love with a photographer but is forced to marry a young rich men who is supposed to solve all of her mom’s financial problems.

Shireen (Konkona Sen Sharma) is a mother of 3 whose husband uses her exclusively to satisfy his sexual needs, without ever paying attention to her emotions. She secretly finds a job as a salesperson and is quite successful at it, but doesn’t know how to tell her husband. In the meantime, she discovers her husband is unfaithful to her.

Rehana (Plabita Borthakur) is a college student from a conservative Muslim family. She wears the abaya and niqab to go out, but she secretly takes it off once in the college premises. She becomes involved in student protests, she drinks, she finds love… everything hidden from her family, under the burkha!

Is Lipstick Under My Burkha Banned?

In January 2017, when Lipstick under my burkha was supposed to be released in India, it was banned by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The director appealed the decision to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) and voluntarily cut a number of scenes. The FCAT added a few scenes to be cut, they reached an agreement and the movie was successfully released in India in July 2017.

The Lipstick under my burkha controversy continued when the poster for the movie came out, as some were outraged by its showing of a middle finger covered by a lipstick and the statement: “it takes balls to be a woman”.

It should be noted however that, despite the title, the protagonists of Lipstick under my burkha come from both Hindu and Muslim backgrounds.

In fact, to add to the Lipstick under my burkha controversy, a group of Muslim leaders from Bhopal called for the boycott of the movie for hurting Muslim sensitivity, and went as far as pushing the Government to get the movie banned.
